Car insurance is a significant annual expense for most Australians - and unlike petrol or groceries, it's one where the price you pay is heavily influenced by factors within your control. Whether you're on comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, or just CTP, there are real opportunities to pay less without taking on more risk than you're comfortable with.
The Three Levels of Car Insurance in Australia
Understanding what you're buying is the first step. In Australia, car insurance broadly falls into three levels: Compulsory Third Party (CTP), which covers injury to other people and is legally required in every state (it does NOT cover vehicle damage); Third Party Property Only (TPPO), which adds cover for damage to other people's vehicles and property; and Comprehensive, which covers damage to your own vehicle as well.
Many Australians default to comprehensive without assessing whether it's the right product for their situation. If your car is older and worth less than $8,000–$10,000, the annual premium difference between comprehensive and TPPO plus the excess you'd pay in a claim may mean comprehensive isn't the most efficient choice.
Agreed Value vs Market Value: Which Is Cheaper?
When insuring your car, you'll be asked to choose between agreed value (a fixed payout amount agreed with the insurer upfront) and market value (whatever the car is worth at the time of a claim, as determined by the insurer).
Market value policies are typically cheaper upfront. However, if your car is stolen or written off, the market value payout can be significantly less than you expected - especially as the car ages. Agreed value gives you certainty. The right choice depends on your car's age and how important the payout certainty is to you.
CTP: Do You Have a Choice?
In most Australian states, CTP is provided by a government monopoly or a small set of approved insurers - you have limited choice. The exception is NSW and QLD, where you can choose your CTP insurer and prices vary. If you're in NSW or QLD, it's worth comparing CTP prices at greenslip.com.au (NSW) or myCTP (QLD) at renewal.
In ACT, NT, SA, TAS, VIC, and WA, CTP is either government-run or bundled into registration - no comparison needed.
