Update: Cashrewards closed in September 2025. ShopBack is the live cashback app. This post is kept because people still search the comparison.
ShopBack is a cashback platform: click through, buy, wait, get a percentage back. That is not ROOPON. ROOPON is a paid membership with partner discounts at checkout and FREE included prize-draw entries per your plan.
How cashback works
Cashback apps earn money through affiliate commissions. You click through to a retailer, buy, wait for tracking, then withdraw after a confirmation period and a minimum balance.
That is ShopBack today. It was also Cashrewards until September 2025.
Retailer coverage
ShopBack lists a broad merchant network (they publish a large Australian and international retailer set). Cashrewards used to compete on Australian-brand coverage. That comparison is historical. There is one live cashback app to open, not two.
Cashback rates
Rates vary by retailer, category, and promotion period. When both brands existed, neither was consistently better. Today only ShopBack’s live rates matter.
Typical ranges for common categories:
| Category | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Fashion / clothing | 5–15% |
| Electronics | 1–5% |
| Travel | 3–10% |
| Groceries | 1–3% |
| Financial products | Flat fee ($30–$100) |
Promotional rates - offered during sale events like Click Frenzy, Black Friday, or specific category promotions - can be significantly higher, sometimes doubling the standard rate for a limited window.
ShopBack tends to run more aggressive promotional periods and has historically offered higher headline rates during events.
Cashrewards used to market faster confirmation on some merchants. That is no longer a choice you can make.
Payout speed
ShopBack still uses a confirmation model: cashback appears as pending until the retailer confirms the sale. That commonly takes 30–90 days. For high-value purchases the wait can be worth it; for a $8 pending tile it often is not.
Tracking reliability
This is the most common point of frustration with cashback. Tracking fails when:
- An ad blocker intercepts the tracking cookie
- Browser privacy settings block affiliate tracking
- The session expires between clicking the link and completing the purchase
- Multiple browser windows for the same retailer are open
ShopBack has a claims process for missed cashback. It works but you have to notice the miss.
To minimise tracking failures: disable ad blockers for the specific retailer session, avoid opening multiple tabs, and complete the purchase in one session immediately after clicking through.
Which should you use?
Use ShopBack if you still want free cashback. Cashrewards is gone. Checking two dead-or-alive portals is not a 2026 strategy.
If you want partner discounts at checkout and FREE included prize-draw entries, that is ROOPON — a paid membership, not a second cashback app.
Where cashback apps fall short
For everyday spending - groceries, fuel, local services, in-person purchases - cashback apps are largely irrelevant. The model requires online purchases through tracked links, which excludes a significant portion of most households' spending.
The other structural limitation: the rates, while real, are modest. One to five percent cashback on regular purchases means $5–$15 per month for a household spending $300–$500 online. That is real money but not transformative.
For immediate, higher-percentage savings on regular online spending, exclusive discount codes tend to outperform cashback. ROOPON membership includes partner codes at checkout. Rates vary by partner — do not treat “15–40% off” as a guarantee on every store. The saving is on the invoice, not 90 days later.
The approaches are complementary: apply the discount code to reduce the purchase price, then run the purchase through a cashback portal to capture the remaining percentage. You cannot always stack both, but when you can, the combined saving is the best available.
The bottom line
ShopBack can sit in a broader savings approach. It should not be your only strategy. The returns on everyday spending are modest, payout timelines are long, and tracking can fail. Cashrewards is not an option anymore.
Where they genuinely earn their place: high-value purchases, travel bookings, and new financial product signups where the cashback amount is large enough to meaningfully reward the behaviour.
ROOPON members get partner discount codes and FREE included prize-draw entries per their plan. Current prizes and terms: roopon.com/giveaways. Codes: roopon.com/discount-codes.
